Locum Pediatrician: Nurturing Young Lives on a Temporary Basis

Talk to a pediatrician for any length of time and you’ll quickly realize a few things.

One, he or she is probably an excellent communicator. Two, they are probably passionate advocates for their patients and, three, above all, they are young at heart!

While locum tenens pediatricians don’t work with children in a traditional capacity – watching them grow from newborn, to infant, toddler, adolescent and teen over the course of many years, locum tenens pediatricians still play an important role in hospitals and private practices around the country.

No matter the setting, pediatricians working a locum contract serve as their patient’s healthcare advocate, treat a wide array of cases for everything from wellness checks to childhood illness, and set kids, families and communities up for success.

Those who choose to work as locum tenens pediatricians often fall into two categories. Some are retired physicians who want to stay active and use their expertise in a more flexible capacity, while others are younger physicians who pick up extra shifts to pay off student loans or beef up their clinical skills.

Locum pediatricians may work a few days or a few months on a contract. They may work nights or weekends. But no matter the schedule, the work will be challenging AND rewarding. One bit of advice, since locum pediatricians often travel between states, it’s a good idea for locum pediatricians to make sure they remain eligible to work in several states at a time.

Locum tenens careers may have begun with a need to fill healthcare shortages in rural areas, but today, there are physician shortages in rural areas and urban areas. Experts predict a shortage of 120,000 doctors by 2030.

While the average salary for a full-time/staff pediatrician is $191,371,/year, locum pediatricians can see a yearly salary of $260,000 with an hourly rate of up to $125/hour. (This rate varies based on location, years of experience and level of demand.)

Pediatricians looking for job flexibility, an increase in pay, rewarding outcomes and fun at work can find all of this and more as a locum tenens, and we can help.
