What is a physician assistant?

How do you become a physician assistant?

To become a physician assistant in the US, you must complete the following steps: 

  1. Earn a master’s degree – usually in a science-related field, and complete prerequisite coursework such as anatomy, biology, and chemistry. 
  1. Complete an accredited physician assistant program – these programs typically last about 27 months and include both classroom instruction and over 2,000 hours of clinical rotations. 
  1. Become certified – after graduating, pass the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam (PANCE) to earn the PA-C (Physician Assistant-Certified) credential. 
  1. Obtain a state license – apply for licensure in the state where you plan to practice. Each state has its own requirements and application processes. 
  1. Maintain your certification – to stay certified, you must complete continuing medical education (CME) and pass a recertification exam every 10 years.
