How to Become a Pulmonologist

Pulmonology may not be the most well-known healthcare specialty, but it is certainly an important one – treating a variety of lung and respiratory tract conditions such as asthma, pneumonia, tuberculosis, bronchitis, COPD and emphysema.

The specialty, also known as pulmonary medicine, respiratory medicine or thoracic medicine, focuses on disorders of the respiratory system. Since it’s a subspecialty of internal medicine, if you’re interested in becoming a pulmonologist, that’s where you’ll start.

It can take up to 13 years to become a pulmonologist, starting with a four-year college degree followed by medical school and a residency in internal medicine. After that, you’ll need to complete additional training with a fellowship in pulmonology.

Besides medical training, you’ll also want to develop a variety of other skills such as:

  • Communication
  • Compassion
  • Attention to Detail
  • Dexterity
  • Leadership
  • Physical Stamina
  • Patience

But is pulmonology a good career?  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, between now and 2032, the profession – which now includes between 12,000 and 12,500 pulmonologists – will see continued 3 percent job growth.

Location and Salary

Pulmonologists can be found in private practice and in hospital intensive care units. At this time, the annual mean wage for a pulmonology job in the U.S. is $303,000 with an hourly mean wage of $131. Salaries, however, do vary depending on location, position and experience/skill level.

The work/life balance of a pulmonologist can be difficult, since on average, pulmonologists work 61 hours a week – and the job may require some physical tasks. But the job can be rewarding and ever-changing as pulmonologists care for patients needing chronic and acute care.
