How to Prepare for a Locum Tenens Interview
No matter your title or career path, preparing for a job interview can be a nerve-wracking experience. And preparing for a locum tenens job interview is no different!
The good news is, many of the same tips and tricks you’d use in a “regular” job interview also apply to locum tenens interviews.
Do Your Research
First, you’ll want to do your research – and don’t wait until the last minute. Start by visiting the company’s website and social media sites. Find out about their mission, values and the type of patients they serve. Do they have a good reputation? Is one service line considered better than others? You can find out with just a few clicks across your keyboard!
Once you have that information, check out the surrounding area. If your locum tenens job will have you living in the area for an extended period of time, you’ll want to find out about area churches, civic organizations and cultural options.
Make a List
And before you move on to the next item on your list, talk to your recruiter. They will be able to tell you more about the job you’re interviewing for and the responsibilities that go along with the role. Your recruiter can be a valuable resource. Don’t be afraid to ask if they’ve worked with this client before, or if they have any interview tips they could share for your particular situation. They may even be able to give you a list of possible interview questions the client has used in the past!
Interview Time
Next, you’ll want to schedule your interview. Make sure you confirm time, place and location. Then, practice using your computer or phone if you’ll be interviewing using video conferencing software. Don’t plan on doing your interview from the front seat of your car – though you do want to be in a quiet, private space. And even if you’ll only be seen from the chest up, make sure you’re dressed professionally.
Practice Makes Perfect
Before the interview, you’ll want to practice. Put together a list of possible physician job interview questions and go through a mock interview with a friend or family member. You don’t want your answers to seem rehearsed, but you do want to come across as composed, prepared and able to think on your feet.
Make sure you put together a short list of questions, too. Yes, they are interviewing you – but you’re also interviewing them. You don’t have to take every job you’re offered, so this is the best time to ask those deal-breaker questions and make sure THIS job is the perfect fit.
The End
Once the interview is over, you’ll want to make sure you thank the interviewer and if you think the job is a good fit, make sure they know you are interested in the position. If you have additional questions that weren’t answered during the interview, talk to your recruiter and fine tune those details.
No matter what the outcome, you’ll walk away knowing you did everything in your power to put your best foot forward.
